Caroline Vis is a contemporary abstract painter based in Brittany, France. Working primarily on large-scale canvases, her practice explores the relationship between movement, time, and emotional presence.

Her work is held in private and corporate collections across Europe, the United States, Asia, and the Middle East.

Vis has exhibited internationally and developed her practice over more than a decade, evolving from early independent exhibitions and international art fairs to establishing her own contemporary gallery on the Breton coast.

Her paintings are characterized by a distinctive language of fine, continuous lines combined with layered color fields, creating a sense of rhythm, tension, and flow.

Artist Statement

Caroline Vis paints to capture time in motion.

Her work does not depict events or narratives, but registers movement, duration, and internal shifts. Each painting emerges through a process of continuous layering, where fine lines move rhythmically across the surface, building a visual field that unfolds rather than resolves.

Time within the work is not fixed. It accumulates, overlaps, and dissolves. What appears intense at first may reveal softness, openness, or stillness over time.

Color is applied intuitively, responding to emotional states rather than predefined systems. Meaning is not imposed, but arises through interaction — between density and space, tension and release, presence and disappearance.

Her paintings function as active fields rather than images. They invite the viewer to slow down, follow the movement, and experience time as something felt rather than measured.

Biography

Caroline Vis (b. 1965, The Netherlands) is a contemporary abstract painter based in Brittany, France.

Her work is rooted in movement, rhythm, and emotional translation. Working on large-scale canvases, she builds each painting through layers of gesture, color, and fine linear structures that create a continuous sense of flow.

Since 2014, Vis has developed her practice through international exhibitions, art fairs, and collaborations with collectors and platforms.

In 2017, she relocated to France, where she continued to expand her artistic language. In 2022, she founded her own contemporary gallery in Ploubazlanec, creating a direct connection between studio practice and collectors.

Her work has been featured in international art platforms and publications, and selected works have appeared in auction listings and are held in private collections worldwide.

Vis currently works from her coastal studio in Brittany and collaborates internationally with collectors, advisors, and curators.
